The one-line rule: courier is door-to-door and includes customs clearance at both ends; air cargo is airport-to-airport and leaves clearance, terminal fees and final delivery to your receiver. Under roughly 100 kg, courier’s bundled model is almost always cheaper once cargo’s hidden fees are added. Above it — or for pallet-sized freight — cargo starts winning.

Cargo tariffs look tempting because the airline quotes only the flight. Add what the quote omits — forwarder handling in Delhi, export documentation, destination terminal charges billed in foreign currency, the receiver’s clearing-agent fee, and delivery from the airport — and a 40 kg cargo shipment usually lands above the courier price, with the receiver doing paperwork on top. The crossover sits around the point where those fixed fees spread across enough kilos to fade: as a rule of thumb, three-digit weights.
The flight itself, yes — but the quote excludes forwarder handling, export filing, destination terminal charges, the clearing agent and last-mile delivery. Comparing courier’s all-inclusive price against cargo’s flight-only price is the classic apples-to-oranges error.
Yes — large shipments move as multi-piece courier bookings, and per-kg slab rates drop steeply at bulk weights. Whether courier or cargo wins at 150 kg depends on the destination and whether your receiver can handle airport clearance; we price both on request.
The receiver — they appoint a clearing agent at the destination airport, pay terminal and agent fees, and collect the freight or arrange onward delivery. With courier, the carrier’s own broker does this invisibly and the box arrives at the door.
Commercial air-cargo exports move against a shipping bill, where the exporter’s IEC is standard. Personal-effects courier shipments do not need an IEC — sender KYC documents cover them, which is one more reason households ship courier.
