Courier food items to Canada from India — CFIA rules, what's allowed and charges
Rules & rates last verified: 13 July 2026 · by Mrs. Madhu Satija, Managing Director, CargoCharges
Yes — sealed, shelf-stable food can be couriered from India to Canada: packaged snacks, dry sweets, tea, spices, pickles in sealed retail jars are NOT banned for Canada (unlike some destinations). CFIA limits apply per category, meat and dairy are prohibited, and a ₹2,000 food surcharge applies.
The rules that apply
CFIA (Canadian Food Inspection Agency) allows personal food imports within per-category limits — e.g. up to 20 kg of most dry foods per person.
Meat, dairy and fresh produce are prohibited; dried dairy-free sweets and snacks are fine.
Sealed retail pickle jars ARE accepted for Canada — a lane-specific difference customers often ask about.
A ₹2,000 food surcharge applies over the standard parcel rate.
Charges: standard rate + ₹2,000 food items premium
Your parcel is charged at the normal Canada rate for its weight — from the carriers that accept food items on this lane (DHL, FedEx, UPS, Self, Prompt) — plus a one-time ₹2,000 handling premium. Worked example: 5 kg ≈ ₹7,293 (Self) + ₹2,000 premium = ₹9,293, excl. 18% GST. Express option: 5 kg ≈ ₹7,324 (CargoCharges.com, 2-3 Working Days) + ₹2,000 premium = ₹9,324, excl. 18% GST. Economy transit: 4-9 Working Days from Delhi dispatch, with free pickup across Delhi NCR.

Food Items to Canada — FAQs
Pickles to Canada — really allowed?
Yes — sealed retail pickle jars are accepted on the Canada lane, unlike UAE or Australia where carriers refuse pickles in every form. Factory-sealed jars only; homemade pickle in reused jars is still refused.
How much food can I send per parcel to Canada?
CFIA personal limits are generous — roughly 20 kg for most dry categories. Practical parcels of 5-15 kg mixed dry food clear routinely; we validate your list against the category limits at booking.
What is the cost of a food parcel to Canada?
For example: 5 kg ≈ ₹7,293 (Self) + ₹2,000 premium = ₹9,293, excl. 18% GST. GST of 18% applies on the total bill.
Any Canada-specific packing advice for food?
Winter: glass jars and liquid-adjacent items can freeze in transit — double bubble-wrap and keep them centre-of-box. Transit runs 4-9 Working Days from Delhi dispatch.
